RAM is a subset of SMART, where the S is Specific and T is time-boxed (which is why you set deadlines). You could say "I want to lose 10 lbs." - it would be RAM, but not SMART, because you didn't draw that line in the sand.

One can quibble with the difference between Specific and Measurable or that between Achievable and Realistic, but the base concept doesn't change. The better you can define what succcess looks like, and set the bar so you can see yourself doing it, the more likely you are to achieve it.
