I think you provide an excellent analysis of the pros and cons of telecommuting and office based work. What I'd like to add is that I don't see this as an either/or issue. I think busineses and individuals can actually get the best of both worlds by doing a bit of both. I spent much of the last 3 years splitting my time between New York - where I worked from home - and Dublin (Ireland) where I worked in an office environment. I saw the value of both and really appreciated the "change is as good as a rest" effect of shifting from one environment to the other. If employees mix up some telecommuting with some office based work they can balance the productive bursts of uninterrupted home work with some productive collaboration back at the office. Businesses can still save some $$ on office space if their employees are only around say 50% of the time on average. Oh and perhaps the "in-office" collaboration, aka "meetings", might become productive again because folks have actually spent some productive time at home working on their actions from the last meeting! Could this really be a win/win?
